ECLIPSE

celestiamusicaexperience

To outshine; surpass. This is how the dictionary defines the word eclipse, and this group is sure to create a musical experience destined to outshine and surpass any audience’s expectations. Mixing elements of jazz, funk, rhythm & blues, and gospelwith every note, the men of ECLIPSE – Everett Freeman, DeAndre Manning and Michael Warren – will take listeners on an auditory journey unlike any other, with musical surprises stretching across the musical galaxy.

Taking standards, well known and original rhythm and blues songs, and giving them new and inventive treatments, is the calling card of ECLIPSE. The ordinary becomes extraordinary, and the familiar becomes indescribably groove-filled. The ECLIPSE experience, just like the celebrated celestial event, often leaves audiences in awe, and filled with anticipation for the next encounter.

Based in Kansas City, Missouri with collective national and international resumes, these gentlemen have a combination of over 75+ years in the music business, performing for audiences and communities, and teaching the art of music making and music history to young artists across the globe. Recording artists in their own right, each of the men of ECLIPSE has a catalog of recorded music as leaders and side men.

EVERETT FREEMAN – PIANO/VOCALS

Rooted in the gospel, blues and jazz traditions of Kansas City, Everett Freeman presents a historic master class on the piano, with every concert. His electric playing, coupled with his soulful vocal delivery, leaves the listening audience wanting more.

A recipient of the George Salisbury Scholarship, Everett attended the Music Conservatory at the University of Missouri, Kansas City, and received the NARAS Grammy Award for productions of the song Begging The Shadows.

The genius of his musical director skills were evident with the one man show Paul Robeson, which toured nationally.

Accompanist to the legendary vibraphonist Roy Ayers, and past 13-year accompanist to Grammy award winning songstress Oleta Adams, Everett has been a supporting and featured artist on many notable jazz festival stages, including The North Sea Jazz Festival.

For over 30 years, Everett Freeman has toured nationally and internationally presenting performances, workshops and master classes to audiences of all ages. He is a prolific writer and arranger who puts his signature style on every song he creates. A crowd favorite at London’s Ronnie Scott’s Jazz Club, Everett has performed extensively in The United Kingdom, The Netherlands, West Indies, Brazil, Costa Rica, Japan, Holland, and Turkey.

DEANDRE MANNING – BASS

DeAndre Manning is the premier “in demand” bassist in Kansas City, nationally and internationally. In the tradition of funk bassist Bootsy Collins, jazz bassist Ray Brown and the call and response rhythms of the gospel church experience, DeAndre Manning takes charge of the “mothership” of the ECLIPSE groove as no other bassist can.

A self-taught musician who started playing music at the age of 3, DeAndre honed his primary musical skills in the church through accompanying many local church choirs and ensembles, and noted gospel groups like The Kansas City Evangelistic Gospel Singers. By age 11, he was well versed in playing bass guitar, drums and piano, and at 13, he performed with national gospel recording artists Douglas Miller, Merna Summers, Rodney Posey andDonald Lawrence.

In high school, DeAndre took an interest in jazz music which lead him to a 2-year residency at Wichita State University as a percussion and music education major. Making the decision to perform music as a full time career, DeAndre would go on to perform with many groups in Wichita, Kansas, Kansas City, and tour with noted New York band, Groove Inc.

Shedding historical light on the history and progression of jazz in Kansas City, and the forming of Local 627 Black Musician’s Union (Kansas City’s Mutual Musician’s Foundation), DeAndre lent his musical talent and perspective to the Channel 41 documentary, “Kansas City and All That Jazz.”

A noted songwriter, arranger, and recording artist, DeAndre Manning has shared the stage with The Drifters, The Dazz Band, Ollie Silk, Jackiem Joyner, Brian Simpson, Kayla Waters, and Roy Ayers.

MICHAEL WARREN – DRUMS

Internationally acclaimed drummer Michael Warren embodies every exciting element that makes for a rhythmic experience that is “other worldly” and “funky beyond belief.” The percussive genius he displays on the drums knows no limits, making ballads equally as lush and exciting as more up-tempo dance selections. His musical intuition is telepathic.

As one of the most well-rounded and creative drummers around, he is particularly known for his unmistakable “Kansas City Swing Feel.”

The late jazz drummer Max Roach praised Michael’s prowess on the drum kit, and Lincoln Center’s Wynton Marsalis, upon hearing Michael play, exclaimed about his “in the pocket” groove: “Yeah man, you in there!”

A highly sought after national and international adjudicator and clinician, Michael Warren continues his 25 year + commitment to teaching students all over the globe. For 15 years, Michael Warren held the position of Jazz Drum Set Professor at the University of Missouri, Kansas City’s Music Conservatory.

A first call drummer in Kansas City, nationally and internationally, Michael Warren is a masterful song writer, arranger, and recording artist. He has written and arranged for many bands and artists including The Jazz Disciples, Voyage, ECLIPSE and Thelonious Monk International Jazz Vocalist winner and recording artist Lisa Henry.
