In the 2006 Comedic Drama, ATL, Rashad asks “what kind of name is New, New anyway?” New New responds, “I’m New New cause I always rock the new new!”

What does that have to do with my quartet you ask, well it’s really the foundation on which I’ve positioned the group. The Doyle Tipler Quartet is focused on playing original music composed by band leader, Doyle Tipler as well as other modern day jazz composers. “My intent is to stray away from playing the same material heard in other groups, but to create and pave our own path.” While much of the music will be “new”, it will represent and maintain the same spirit set forth by jazz giants such as Miles Davis, Herbie Hancock, Freddie Hubbard and Art Blakey just to name a few. In this regard we are striving to define the New New!

Doyle Tipler – Trumpet, Flugelhorn

Darren Pettit – Sax

Mitch Towne – Organ

Jeffrey Johnson – Drums

Doyle has spent the last 25 years displaying his talents around the Omaha area with a variety of groups. He’s currently the leader of Luigi Inc, a local jazz combo founded by the late great Luigi Waites that is recognized as maintaining one of the longest steady gigs in the country at Mister Toads every Sunday. Doyle has also been heard with Finest Hour, Confidentials, Marcus Lewis Big Band, Billy McGuigans Rave On & Rock Twist, as well as the Omaha Big Band. As a member of UNO Jazz Ensemble, he was the recipient of the Outstanding Soloist award at both the Wichita Jazz Festival and Northern Colorado Jazz Festival.

Mitch Towne is a keyboardist and touring musician, and is widely considered the go-to Hammond organist in the Midwest. His ability to move seamlessly between diverse styles has made him a sought after side man with artists as varied as jazz/R&B artist and Grammy winning producer Terrace Martin, jazz heavyweights Ryan Kisor, Dave Stryker, Joel Frahm and Matt Wilson, blues artists Eric Gales and Ben Poole, and multi-platinum artist Aloe Blacc. In 2015, Towne played organ on the track Push for the album Velvet Portraits by Terrace Martin, which was nominated for a 2016 Grammy for Best R&B album.

A native of Fayetteville, North Carolina and a recent transplant to the Omaha area, Jeffery Johnson is a soulful, swinging presence on the scene. Steeped in the tradition of gospel music as a child, Johnson eventually attended the University of North Carolina at Pembroke to pursue a B.A. in Music with a concentration in Jazz Studies. During his undergraduate program, Jeffery played R&B, Gospel, and Jazz throughout North Carolina, and embarked on another musical journey to obtain his M.M. in Jazz Studies at North Carolina Central University under the direction of Dr. Ira Wiggins, where he was fortunate to learn from Branford Marsalis and Joey Calderazzo.
